How to use ArcIMS

This site uses ArcIMS technology. ArcIMS is a cutting-edge GIS application that enables you to manipulate GIS data in different, useful ways. ArcIMS allows you to:

  • Find a City, Stream, Soil Type, Road, etc.
  • View information about different data layers, such as Roads, Cities, Soils Data, etc.
  • Construct your own geographic queries and searches to find a location.
  • Build your own custom map, complete with title and legend, and print it out.
  • Measure distances, and create buffers around specified features.

A layer is a set of data that you can make visible on the map. For example, the Roads layer contains data for roads in the county. You will be able to see Roads on the map when you make this Roads layer visible.

Data layers are organized into folders for convenience.

When you click on the layers button, you can expand the folder groups. This will allow you to see the layers associated with a specific groups.

Left of each layer's name on the Layers page is a check box that controls if a layer is visible or not.

To see the layer on the map, check the box next to its name. Sometimes this is not an option because the box is grayed out. This simply means that this particular layer is not visible at the current extent of the map.

Click the magnifying glass next to the layer's name to zoom to the extent on the map where the layer is visible. This causes the check box next to the layer's name to no longer be grayed out, and is selectable to make the layer visible on the map.

Before you can use any of the mapping tools, you must pick a target layer that you wish to analyze. This target layer is the active layer.

In order to make a layer active, it must be made visible on the map. Do this by checking the box next to the layer's name. After doing this, the layer's name has now become a clickable link. Click the layer's name to make the layer active.

Corresponding to the order in which they are listed, layers are drawn on the map from bottom to top.

This means, the last layer listed in its folder group is the bottom most layer. It is drawn below all other layers. So, if the layer listed above it is visible as well, it could be obscuring the layer underneath it.

Simply un-checking the box next to the upper layer's name will make the layer below it visible.

Simply click the legend button to view the map legend.

This creates a legend for layer the layers currently visible on the map..
